Registration is required for this activity.
This exciting Adult Volunteer Vacation is based at the AMC Corman Harriman Outdoor Center in Harriman State Park. The center is a refurbished camp on the shores of Breakneck Pond and Volunteers stay in one of the newly reconstructed rustic cabins.
This crew is designed for adults 18 and over to experience challenging and rewarding trail stewardship work just North of New York City. These week-long Crews are led by qualified AMC Trail Crew Leaders.
The program begins on Sunday afternoon with an orientation and dinner at AMC's Harriman Outdoor Center. Each weekday morning after breakfast, the crew will hike to a nearby trail to work on trail reconstruction and maintenance projects. The first participants of Harriman's Trail Crews are the lucky ones that will learn what goes into building a hiking trail as the first slated project will be to continue constructing a trail around the pond. Other projects may involve clearing brush to better define existing trails, cleaning drainage to help with erosion problems, installing water bars and bog bridges, painting blazes, and other crucial conservation tasks. Please remember that while we work within the abilities and comfort of the group, the nature of hiking and the work is strenuous and demanding, and we will be out rain or shine.
It is certainly not all work though. Your crew will take plenty of time to relax with a good book, play cards, take hikes and maybe even take a swim in the pond. All of the food for the week is included in the program cost, as is lodging and leadership from two AMC Crew Leaders with ample Outdoor and & Leadership experience.
